Dear 16 year old me…

first off, stop feeling sorry for yourself, you actually like yourself, its just not cool to be your own biggest fan. Yet… you’ll actually learn in time how much people love you, and believe me the realisation itself is earth shattering… People will cancel their parties ‘cause you can’t make it!

Those boys your hanging out with, don’t worry, the worst part in hindsight will be one of your teachers finding you crying in the ladies toilets and even at that, it’s not so bad, you’re actually going to be more embarrassed than upset about the whole situation.

Do me a favour though, talking of school… bunk Chemistry while you have the chance, you’re way better at Home ec, and how about trying to study from time to time… go for that… Scouts will always be there!

Go on challenge and enjoy it, I know I did, but be more out going. You know that false confindence you hide hind? Yeah that’s actually you, you don’t need to pretend to be out going, funny and witty. You are!

You’re going to lose some people along the way babe, it’s how life goes, and it will be shit, and upsetting and you’ll feel like nothing will get better or change, but again, you’ll be wrong… you’ll over come it… as the song goes, you’ll get by with a little help from your friends.

Do what you actually want to do after school, don’t get scared or make rash decisions cause you don’t think you can do it, not trying is failing enough.

Get a job, you actually enjoy being useful so stop being a waster and just get on it… You know how much you love money now? It doesn’t go away… and on that note, first year of college? Do not, under any circumstances get that credit card… I can guarantee you’ll have very little to show and still be paying it back five years later.

Smoking, now you do smoke at the moment and that’s great, but they’ll go up to 9.10€… which is manky, that and your general health… to be honest, you won’t be too concerned about that, you aren’t now and lets face it, 7 years time you won’t be either, but yes stop smoking if only to save some cash!

Your best friends now will still be there, however you’ll be lucky enough to have Becks and Crowley there along side you too. You won’t cut many cords, you will however drift away and don’t try too hard to salvage those friendships, easy come easy go!

Don’t cut your hair really short, you don’t regret it for six months then you have to spend a fortune on extensions, also… surprisingly, blonde is good on you…

You already met the man, I’m currently seeing, he’s a game changer and you won’t suspect a thing… You’ll never have felt like this though but I won’t ruin the surprise.

You want to be a teacher, please follow this dream, the idea of going back to college in 2013 is a nightmare!

So advice in a nutshell 16 year old Chris… Be yourself, don’t be scared of things not working out cause believe me, if you think like that they won’t. Smile, it’s a nice one, or so you’ve been told. Stop pretending to be confident and do it, just throw cation to the wind and do it. Also, be nicer to your folks, they work hard! Also, about 20, your reading list gets rather long, read the Count of Monte Cristo now…

Peace and Love little friend,

Kris, aged 22

PS. Frank Turner, buy his album in 3 years…

but everyone stumbles on old cocaine.
I love a bad taste joke as much as the next person but when it comes to a death related to drugs or alcohol it always seems too harsh. Amy Winehouse will not be remembered by the masses for a voice that broke boundaries in modern pop culture but for an addiction she couldn’t cope with…
She was an absolute mess a lot of the time and we as a society judge her and so many like her for that but really, should we not feel sorry for the Amy’s of this world… Russel Brand wrote beautifully about how he knew her and how addiction is a disease (one both he and Amy suffered from) we don’t think of it as a disease though do we?
We believe people make bad choices and they don’t have to try their first line of cocaine, pill or drink but I live a simple life, without all that fame and success even I can see those bad choices aren’t just for the select few. Those bad choices aren’t always made in the best frame of mind to begin with. We all know someone who drinks too much, we all know someone that we think might have an addiction issue… but we’re young… it’s just a good time… but when do we stop being so young that “having a good time” is an excuse…
This is for you, the nameless fallen soldier of youth who I’m sure people said “they’re just young, having a good time”, to you who’s addiction is ignored… which does not have the opposite effect one may think it has when compared to the media exploitation of Amy’s.
Will we ever understand addiction is not a choice, and certainly not a joke.
